JL SULLIVAN Memorial Trophy - Race Report

The day started warm with a light breeze from NNW.

Sailing began using a four sided course, to navigate around a cruiser moored within the race area. The first race was not scored, and fortunately the cruiser decided to up anchor and depart for other locations.

Handicaps were allocated based on historical records for members, ranging from scratch to 80 seconds.  An additional 20 seconds was added to the handicap for the first four place finishers in each race. This resulted in most skippers ending up with a 40 or 60 second handicap.

By the fourth race, the breeze had risen to about 8 knots, and the chop had increased, caused by the wind driven waves reflecting off the rock wall.  This caused some exciting buoy roundings, particularly involving the buoys close to shore.  The increasing breeze and chop caused some boats to take water, with Jack Ford in particular having to unload part of Moreton Bay on a couple of occasions.

Results were mixed, with no skipper showing constant results.  The first nine races resulting in nine different winners, with results scattered well through the fleet.

At about half time, the course was changed due to the wind shifting to the north.  A somewhat complicated course was selected from the existing buoys and a convenient mooring float.  After some initial confusion, skippers settled down and appeared to enjoy the more challenging course.  With wind increasing to 10 knots and waves causing a washing machine effect, skippers had to concentrate to have any hope of achieving a good finish.

A total of 19 races was sailed, allowing for three discards.

Wind waves weed and water, and a few flat batteries eventually caused four skippers to retire. BG, BC, TP (The B-Rig Bandit) and eventually even the Flying Dutchman had to retire.

During the event, boats 22, 71, and 75 showed good performance.  Boat 93 showed good speed at times.

At the close of sailing, only the intrepid score keeper, Gil Walker had any idea who the eventual winner would be.

The eventual place getters deserved their win, by maintaining concentration and sailing well in the last few races.

JL SULLIVAN Memorial Trophy

The tenth annual “J.L SULLIVAN Memorial Trophy for One Metre Class Yachts” was sailed at Raby Bay on Sunday 30th September 2007.  This is a Handicap event open to Club Members only and is usually sailed on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of John’s passing.

For those members new to the club and who may not be aware of the trophy’s history; John was one of the original members of our club and he was also to be the first editor of a newsletter he was going to call “Tell Tails.”  Unfortunately John soon became ill before he could fulfill this role and he sadly passed away on the 10th September 1997.

John originally won this trophy for sailing many years ago himself and it was his intention to donate the cup to the club for a regatta.  After John passed away his wife Mrs. Pat SULLIVAN kindly carried out John’s wishes and donated the trophy to the club and in the past the trophy has usually been presented by Pat each year in John’s memory.
