2008 Queensland EC12 Championship

The 2008 Championship hosted by the Wynnum Manly Radio Model Yacht Club at Carbrook on Saturday 8th November saw a bare minimum entry of six boats face the starter.

While small in number the fleet was arguably the most competitive to be assembled for a Qld Championship with current National Champion Malcolm Kampe with his tried and true Sorensen, Graeme Turk sailing a new Gillies and experienced IOM and full size sailors Jon Wilson with a Gillies, Rod Molkentin with a Mini Mariner and Peter Morris with his re-birthed Sorensen. Ian Gilmour was back with his beautiful black Sorensen.

Following damage incurred at the heavy weather second day of the Nationals several boats arrived sporting new sails with Malcolm and two of Ian’s boats with radial cut sails by Jon Wilson (Rhumb Line Sails) that were a work of art while Peter Morris was equipped with sails by Garry Taylor. Graeme had his suits of KD sails that have been well used.

As is becoming somewhat usual at EC12 Championships  weather conditions started heavy (B rig) and steadily built during the day to survival conditions in the latter races.

From the start Peter Morris showed that he was going to make Malcolm work and until his premature retirement in race 14 with rig damage both were neck and neck. At that stage Jon Wilson was hanging in there and Graeme showing consistency in mid fleet. Rod was struggling with an uncompetitive borrowed boat and Ian with the occasional good race was generally finding the conditions not to his liking and had retired.

When Rod suffered electrical failure Ian offered his boat and with the agreement of all skippers Rod continued with some excellent results to close on third place. At the end of a tiring day twenty-two races were completed with Malcolm a clear winner from Jon with third being decided on the last race in favour of Rod.

Special thanks to Bill Clancy the PRO for the day, Scorer Gil Walker and the rest of the Wynnum Manly officials who ensured the event ran without a hitch. A special vote of thanks to the WMRMYC group for agreeing to run the event, knowing that the likely field would not be profitable.

The EC12 Class in Qld is at the crossroads and while there are a good number of boats sailing like all classes a large percentage choose not to compete at major events. However with the interest being generated by some new enthusiastic skippers I believe the class will go forward. We have quality boats and sails, a committed builder in Ian Gilmour (Gillies Marine Services) and now all we need is a few more competitive skippers.

Roll on the Nationals at Harrington Park, Sydney over the 9th and 10th May with the likelyhood of a strong NZ team to swell the numbers it should be a great championship. More information from Gary Declauzel, Email: mdeclauzel@iprimus.com.au
