SOUTH QUEENSLAND
EC12 CHAMPIONSHIP
REPORT
The SQ EC12 Championship was hosted by the North Lakes One
Metre Yacht Squadron Inc at Lake Eden North Lakes on Saturday 2nd
June.
A total of seven entries were received and all generally
conformed to the current Australian EC12 Rules. i.e. it looked like and EC12
and had a current measurement certificate.
Racing as usual for the class was conducted in a friendly
manner with all infringements settled on the water. A total of 16 races were
completed.
From the start it was expected that the favorites to contest
the top honours would be Malcolm Kampe with his beautifully prepared
Sorrenson Hull with SailsEtc sails and Yeoman Sands with a similar boat
sporting Power Sails (NZ) and this proved to be the case with the lead
changing and few points separating the two throughout the day. Malcolm had
nine first placings but Yeoman kept in touch with very consistent sailing.
Others to stand out were Ian Gilmour, carrying Carr (US)
sails with two wins and Ken Smith (Own Sails) after a slow start improved
with a win and a number of good placings as the day went on. Andrew Sands
(BG Sails) showed good boat speed but suffered with inconsistency and
reliability.
Bruce Chapman sailing his
first major regatta showed at times that he is coming to terms with sailing
this class.
Overall a great day’s sailing with Malcolm coming out on top
on 22 points from Yeoman (26) second and Ian Gilmour (47) third.
Officials for the day were Graeme Turk and Brian Lever.
