IOM Sth Qld Championships 2007

The Wynnum Manly Radio Model Yacht Club again hosted the IOM Championships at Carbrook.

The Carbrook venue has been steadily developed by the Brisbane Radio Yacht Club. WMRMYC pay a fee to sail there. This time the Carbrook Golf Club was pleased to have our patronage for food and drinks, which is appreciated.

Day One saw 24 skippers weigh in their yachts for the event.

Skippers from Tasmania and Victoria as well as North Qld had registered.

After a welcome address by the Commodore, John McLachlan, the PRO Bill Clancy outlined his requirements for the event.

Sailing commenced with the control area on the south bank and this continued for the whole weekend.

The wind was S to SE at 8kn gusting 10kn which created a quandary of whether to sail A rig or B rig. Between the gusts it seemed that A rig won out.

The windward mark proved to be difficult with Port tack yachts trying to reach the mark over the Starboard tack yachts powering through. Some incredible bingles were seen there.

It was a great education to watch the current World Champion and current Australian Champion, Craig Smith, manouevre his yacht almost seamlessly through the pack, not always successfully, but mostly.

Challenges from the fleet came repetively and the Australian Champion did not always come out on top.

The afternoon was getting colder and the rescue boat crew Allen Penman and Peter Niven, continued to patiently man the dinghy in the lee of the south bank.

Day Two saw 20 skippers assemble to complete the challenge.

Overcast and very light winds.

This became RAIN (whoopee!) which continued on and off, for the rest of the day.

The course was lengthened, the wing mark was placed much further out, and this created some difficulty with the skippers sailing 5, 10, 15 metres past the buoy.

The course now however was such that there was time for skippers to work at catching up if necessary.

There was one protest heard on Saturday and two on Sunday, which limited the number of races held. PRO, Bill Clancy was excellent in his management of the Protest Committees and his instructions to the fleet. His intention to ensure a less experienced skipper was included on the Protest Panel, can only provide experience and a benefit to all future competitors.

The rain continued and the South Bank became very muddy, slippery and unsafe. The Regatta was called off one hour early.

Thanks to Gil Walker and David Black the results were immediately available.

The Presentations for First, Craig Smith, Second, Jabin Crisp and Third, Peter Kampe were then made.

Many thanks, and congratulations, to the people who made it happen:-
