2006 SOUTH QUEENSLAND MARBLEHEAD CHAMPIONSHIP
The South Queensland Marblehead Championship this
year was again hosted by North Lakes One Metre Yacht
Squadron on behalf of Pine Rivers Radio Yacht Club
at Lake Kurwongbah attracted a field of 11 yachts.
Of particular note was Bill Wright returning from
the Marblehead Worlds in UK to face conditions not
experienced in UK.
The weather forecast predicted light south
westerlies followed to a shift to lighter north
easterly conditions in the afternoon.
PRO Bill Clancy, did an excellent job in making the
best of the conditions and managed to get racing
under way in a light south – south easterly at the
scheduled start of 10 am.
It soon became clear that racing was going to be
close with the Paradox’s of Bruce Yarrow and Ben
Leigh Smith taking the first two races and after
three completed races there were 4 separate winners.
Bill Wright (NRW7) then started to come to terms
with the conditions and from then on put in a very
consistent performance to skip clear of the pack.
Behind him Graeme Turk’s Rok, the two Paradox’s of
Bruce Yarrow and Ben Leigh-Smith and Yeoman Sands
NRW3 were locked close together and this did not
change for the rest of the day.
For the second year in a row it was good to see the
great support from the Pine Rivers Club members with
five entries. Overall a total of seven Clubs were
represented in the field which is pleasing. Now we
need to build the numbers.
With the breeze dying around 3:30 it was decided to
call quits a little early with 12 completed races.
Trophies were presented to Bill Wright, 1st
on 17.8 pts, Graeme Turk 2nd 29 pts and
Bruce Yarrow 3rd 30 pts. Ben Leigh Smith
and Yeoman Sands were a further 2 points back.
