ISLES OF NEWPORT
OPEN IOM REGATTA
8TH
OCTOBER 2006
The Redcliffe City Council has recently
approved the NLOMYS Inc use of the Jiburu Canal and adjoining parkland
as a permanent sailing venue for our IOM Class of yachts.
To mark this approval an open regatta
was held with significant support, both financial and promotional, from
the Isles of Newport estate developer PRD Nationwide Land Marketing.
A field of 20 boats representing all
major IOM Clubs from Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast it was to be a hot
competition. A decision was made to contest the event in two fleets
which proved to be wise with less congestion and incidents and probably
less daunting for the less experienced skippers in the fleet.
There was no shortage of breeze,
generally from a northerly direction, with solid A rig conditions for
the first few races and strong B Rig conditions for the remainder of the
day.
Graeme Bird after a slow start settled
into the regatta with a strong performance and excellent boat speed with
his Brad Gibson designed “Punk” on 20 points was a worthy winner with
four firsts and three seconds from the 11 races sailed (2 drops).
Consistent Greg Torpy (Cockatoo 2) was second on 26 points from a fast
finishing Tom Butler (Crossbred) in third on 31 points only a single
point ahead of Josh Torpy (Cockatoo) in 4th place.
A special thank you to scorer Gil
Walker, officials Brian Lever, Warren Mitchell and Ian Gilmour together
with the visiting skippers who made our first major event at the new
venue a great success.
