The Fraser Coast Radio Yacht Club
Inc was incorporated in April, 2002.
As you can see by the photos we
are privileged to have access to an excellent sailing venue right in the centre
of town (see location map). The breezes are generally moderate Sou’easters most
of the year, lighter and more variable in winter.
We sail every Saturday and Wednesday from about 12.30 to 4pm. On Saturdays we try to get the racing underway at 1pm. Wednesdays are less formal and those who can make it often take the opportunity to try new boats, rigs etc.
The fleet consists of marbleheads,
10 raters , 1 metres and a few that defy classification!. Our boats are a
mixture of older “clubman” types (many home-built) and “Grand Prix” types which
include a Vibe and 2 Paradoxes. We hold a mixture of scratch and handicap races
so that members can both get the chance to test their craft against each other
(scratch) and get a fair opportunity to bag a win (handicap). Both clubman and
grand prix divisions have excellent close racing even off scratch.
Currently we have about a dozen devotees
of the sport from Hervey Bay (some formerly of GCRYC), Maryborough and the
Burrum district but this is growing. If you live on the Fraser Coast come and
have a look. The guys are friendly and you may well get a sail.
If you are travelling through
this way to see the whales or going into a training camp prior to a big event,
we would love to see you – don’t leave your boat behind! If you have to, then
try getting in touch a couple of days before you want to sail and we may be
able to organise a loan/charter boat. If all else fails, just drop in at the
venue and try your luck!
