23rd September 2007 Round 8 Handicap Series

at the Isles of Norfolk.

The weather forecast told us to expect strong winds today making it look like a “B” rig day but it was not to be.  At the start of racing the SE breeze was about 10 – 12 knots gusting a little making “A” rigs a bit hard to handle at first with only a couple of skippers opting for “B” rigs.  After a few races the wind veered slightly more to the E with a drop in velocity more suitable to all concerned.

A good course was laid by Tom Butler and Ian Ashe giving a good beat with a port rounding to a wing mark then leeward mark to complete the triangle.  A windward and return then to finish completed the course with a beat.

There were a few contacts which were settled on the water and some buoy contacts requiring 360’s by some skippers.  The gusting winds at times making it easy one minute and hard the next to lay the mark which kept all skippers on the lookout for the sudden lifts one way or another.

Though there were not too many boats on the water the racing was close and all said it was most enjoyable.  Ian Gilmour was once again PRO and was assisted by Warren Mitchell with the results and handicapping.  Ian is hoping to get his Gadget back in the water soon and Brian Lever had radio problems today keeping him on the beach.

Next month should see the return of Graeme Turk from his holiday in Prague when Warren will be off to Spain for two months.  Tom Butler is off to compete in the Word IOM Championships in France in October and we wish him all the luck in his efforts.

Our next sail date is 14th October, Scratch racing, hope to see you there.
