Winter came to the Gold Coast on the morning of Saturday July 05. Strong East winds and torrential rain greeted the skippers as they arrived.Weather inproved as the morning went on with the wind settling in to the SSW, moderating and the rain easing.Bill Clancy got racing underway when the six starters fronted with Ben Leigh-Smith and David Turton swapping first and second places for the first six races. David Thomas up from Vic. with his ulra-narrow local design showed some pace when his rig matched the wind strength. Mark Patterson sailing a borrowed boat (Brian Leydon's) got used to the boat as the day went on and was in the top three-four places for most of the afternoon.Ian Thompson had one top three placing and retired with electical problems. Tom Butler's performance improved noticably after a bit of rig tuning. She was a different boat after lunch and now sailing a little freer had a lot of speed.By race 13 Tom had moved up to being only one point away from second placed David turton who stayed in that place till the end.The final points do not reflect the closeness for much of the racing. There was enough variation in wind direction to keep all skippers on the ball as often boat speed wasn't enough to keep the faster boats in the lead when big gains were made by being on the right side of the course for the lifts.David only got out of the top three once and was very consistent all day.Ben's boat had acceleration as well as speed and his scores reflect how well he sailed. Apart from the rain it was a top days racing with many PRYC members on duty to run the show.
