Report by Alan Walker

A beautiful s/e breeze greeted all those arriving on time.  A toss up between A and B rigs until it came time to set the course when a rain squall arrived in the vicinity of 30 knots creating some pre-race confusion.

Eventually racing got underway with the 4 ten raters starting a minute in front of the 1OM fleet which faced the starter “Le Mans” style. Skippers and boats were staggered along the beach between knee deep and 5 metres up the beach, no running and no throwing of boats or pushing, created pretty even starts.

First leg was  an off wind broad reach to the first mark allowing minimum confrontation on rounding, a long beat followed ,then a reach, another good work, a long free run back to the first mark, and a repeat of the first lap ,around the bottom mark to a short reach before turning onto the wind and working to finish. First and second race in B rigs, except Preston and Taylor and results tell a balanced tale. 3rd and last race definitely all in A suit and another terrific race.

Once again everyone who participated loved the long course as distinct from short course where it’s usually all over at the start. Special thanks to Mal Kampe for PROing on the day.

Report by Tony Fannin

A small fleet lined up for the clubs first Match Race Day.  Charmaine generously agreed to officiate and after bringing everyone up to date with the match racing rules we started the afternoon’s racing.  It was agreed that a windward start - leeward gate and windward finish would do the job.

With the wind from the south east and most of the fleet carrying “B” rigs there was plenty of breeze that ensured quick manoeuvring on the start line.

It was interesting to see the members who are usual mid fleeters were on the money from the start and boat speed was very similar across the whole fleet. In particular the speed of Erin Conza’s “Zig Zag”, and John Preston with his new launched “Matrix”.

A great afternoon of racing that while being different from the fleet race format allowed all competitors the opportunity of race wins with plenty of passing lanes instead of the usual procession after the top mark as in fleet races that are windward – triangle - sausage format.

Thanks to Charmaine White for running an excellent afternoons racing.

As you can see from the above formats, sailing at PRYC is always different and always interesting. Our members learn something new about sailing every week and even though many have sailed dinghies and big boat for many years, the match racing was entirely new to them
