Another great day in Paradise

Today several of the fleet decided to use “A” rigs but after a couple of races it was agreed that to take a break and move down to “B”.  The fleet of 10 boats enjoyed a south east breeze that shifted a round enough to provide plenty of passing lanes.

Today the club tried a simple handicap system that worked very well.  Instead of having 4 handicap races and 8 scratch races the handicap races were broken up into “A” and “B” fleets.  “B” fleet started 30 seconds ahead of “A” fleet.  At the end of each race there was no more than 20 seconds covering the whole fleet.  It would appear that if the fleet start times were adjusted we could have finishing times even closer.  The benefit is that this form of racing allows a group start which is I believe is much more interesting than starting often 1 boat at a time.  The biggest benefit is it’s easy to manage.

Discussed at the “happy hour” at the completion of racing was the old bogeyman the 4 boat length overlap rule.  It was agreed that most clubs seem to have the same issues regarding the definition of 4 boat lengths, so it’s been agreed that we will place a buoy 4 boat lengths from the leeward mark to help everyone out for the next few weeks.   I personally don’t have any problems as everyone seems to be passing me on the reaching legs.
