Handicap Racing
Prior to the
days racing, Mal Kampe from Radio Yacht Supplies conducted a
workshop on the functions of the Specktrum DX6 handset. Those who
took part were unaware for the many benefits these handsets
provide. Thank you, Mal.
Week 2 of our
sailing program saw handicap racing introduced to encourage
participation by members and visitors of all abilities. We
tried out the RYGGed system widely used in Great Britain. Now that I
have tallied the results, some tinkering with handicaps are
forthcoming (anyone know how keep the cream from rising to the top –
other than physical sabotage!!?).
Wind was
fluctuating between “A” & “B” rigs at the start of the first race
and by the second race, was definitely strengthening. Those who went
for the smaller option were rewarded as the “A” riggers struggled to
tack and were forced to gybe to get around the course.
Mercifully
lunch was called after race 4 and frantic rig changing ensued. The
wind did not assist those who were off 30 & 20 seconds as getting a
decent start was a challenge in itself.
