Gold Coast Invitation Handicap
Day
Sunday 22nd April
The racing was due to get under way
at 9.30am however lack of wind had the 14 boat fleet waiting until around
10.30 until the wind settled in the North East with enough strength to be
able to set a course and start racing. The Gold Coast guys were immediately
on the pace with Mike always near the front. At the other end Ian Thompson
provided everyone with plenty of entertainment by beating himself up at each
mark. Maybe a few valium will help. Bob Newcombe had his ‘Waka’
(pronounced woka. In case you are wondering its Maori for canoe or boat) in
the groove and sailed cleanly all day. The racing was very close due in
part to Bill Clancy’s excellent handicapping system. Bill sailed his usual
conservative self and his excellent final placing indicates conservative is
way better than ‘high risk”. Erin Conza the ‘new guy’ to our sport was
another who sailed consistently well. Good on you Erin. After 4 races
everyone was ready to take a half hour break. The next 4 races were held
and once these were completed the top 3 boats were chosen for a 2 race sail
off to decide the winning club for the day.
At the end of racing there was
cook-up and drinks for everyone. The day concluded at 3.00pm
A special thanks to Roger Taylor –
scorer/food purchaser and Trish Walker - cook extraordinaire and Brad
Johnston for setting an excellent course.
