Race 1

13 x One Metres, 2 x10 Raters and 1x A class yacht entered the Inaugural Nifsan- Emerald Lakes Passage Race Series.

The event got under way at 10am after the random draw for start positions. A le-mans start with all boats held in the water and released

on the PROs signal. The mixed fleet were away first on the beat to windward, which they thought was a nice long work until they got around

the point and found they were only halfway up the leg. From the top mark, it was down to a mark in the middle of the lake and across to

the opposite bank and then down to the bottom mark. Lap one done -14 minutes. Oh my gosh!!

The breeze was from the SE and perfect for the A rigs. The 10R of Mark Paterson managed to overlap everyone by the finish line

and completed 6 laps by the end of the hour. Fleets were spread out over the entire lake and small tactical races were being played out

in twos and threes. (Very different to triangle racing).  Tim and Roger got tangled up just after the start but both had time to recover and

record respectable results. Alan headed the IOMs for 4 of the 5 laps. At end of the race, the youngest skipper was heard commenting that

his body was shaking all over. This is stamina racing, mentally and physically.

Race 2

Starting positions were now in reverse order of finishing in race 1, A brilliant start by all, where’s the camera? doh. Now that everyone knows

what this passage race is all about, there is no need to argue about 2cm when there is 1km to go !!! The fleets spread out and went looking

for that elusive lift, the clouds started rolling in and the wind was dropping slightly. Mark (10R) was leading the way again and in the IOMs,

Mal lead the first two laps but was caught in the 3rd lap by Geoff who went on to win Race 2. Even though the skippers were finishing 1 hour

of racing,  they were still fighting for position on the finish line.

Lunchtime

A beautiful bar-b-que was served by Trish and Annie, which was truly appreciated by all.

Race 3

The wind had done its usual 1pm shift to the ESE, so a course change was arranged. The fleets assembled, in random draw, and off they went.

All was fine until they rounded the point and got hit with a bullet of wind which stopped them in their tracks. From there it became survival,

as each boat rounded the top mark, they  copped a 15k smack from behind. The 10rs opted for off wind gypes, the IOMS buried their noses

and the A Class revelled in the conditions.  The IOMs began to fall like flies as the wind strengthened to C rig conditions, as did the 10Rs,

Graeme (A class), Tim, Mal, Roger, And Garth (IOMs) being the only ones to finish the shortened race. The PRO called the race early before it became

a case of “last man standing”.

The symbolic ringing of the bell was performed by Mark Paterson for the mixed fleet and Garth Halton for the IOM fleet.

A sincere THANK YOU to Clive Brooks for accepting the PRO duties. (If the doctor prescribes getting fit, have we got the job for you!!)

To Trish and Annie - without you, they get grumpy!!

To  Jason, thank you for your efforts in the rescue boat.

To Nifsan  & Emerald Lakes – your support is vital to us as we grow. We hope this will be the first of many successful events together.

Many thanks to our Treasurer, Alan, for sourcing and compiling the fantastic perpetual trophy,  which will be mounted at Café Bellago- Emerald Lakes.
