This year the Canberra Model Yacht Club elected to conduct their
Championships (10R and A) over two separate weekends with the A Class being run
over the 14th and 15th November. As luck would have it I had planned to be in
Canberra that weekend so the decision to bring the A was not a difficult one.
On Saturday we were welcomed with flat water and little breeze but Ron Cooper
and team managed to get the fleet of eleven away on time at 1000. With two new
Privateer’s, five Sweets of various vintages, a Venom and three other designs it
was a quality fleet.
From the start it was expected to be a hit out between Gary Declauzel (Sweet 9)
and Brian Dill (Privateer) as was the case in the NSW A’s but fast improving Pat
O’Brian (Venom) a recent A Class convert had other ideas. Andrew Sands
(Privateer) proved to be very quick but mechanical failure on day 1 blew his
chances of a podium finish.
The Sunday saw less breeze than the first day and the start was delayed until
some little breeze arrived around 1100. Sunday saw Pat and Andrew as the form
boats but ever reliable Gary continued consistently for a well deserved win.
The other podium placings came down to the last race (of 25) with Pat getting up
by 1 point from Brian.
Final placings were:
| 1st | Gary Declauzel (Sweet 9) | 43 pts |
| 2nd | Pat O’Brian (Venom) | 57 pts |
| 3rd | Brian Dill (Privateer) | 58 pts |
| 4th | Graeme Turk (Extra) | 81 pts |

| 11th | Leigh Norman | 185 pts |
