2007 ARYA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

INTERNATIONAL A CLASS

This years A Class Championship conducted on Lake Kurwongbah in Queensland attracted a field of thirteen entries representing WA (2), VIC (1), NSW (3), ACT (2), and QLD (4) with twelve starting.

The standard of entries was strong with two Swords, four Sidewinders, a Venom, Sweet 9, Vapour Trail, NRWA and own designs Extra and K-60-A.

PRO Bill Clancy with officials supplied by the Mooloolaba Radio Yacht Club and scorers Gil Walker and David Black had racing under way on time at 10:30 in a light 5 – 10 knot easterly breeze.

From the start it was clear that the Sword of Gary Cotterell and the Sidewinder of Rob O’Brien were quick in the conditions and looked like the boats to beat and the two fought it out all day with little between them. Gary Declauzel was consistent and improved during the day but never challenged the leaders.

Tim Arland sailing his Venom for the first time in competition was not far behind Gary with Daniel Weizman, Sidewinder, the best of the rest. Greg Willis was consistent with his Vapour Trail while Julian Frayne, Sword, showed great speed at times with three wins but suffered with electrical problems.

Of the rest Yeoman Sands was very consistent with his own design Extra which was better in the stronger conditions, Graeme Turk sailing a borrowed NRWA, owned by Yeoman was quick in the flat water but struggled as it chopped up while the others struggled.

The second day dawned with steady rain, the best halls we have had for some time and while the rain dampened the atmosphere the racing was intense.

The first race started in light conditions (and rain) and got lighter resulting in four boats being timed out. Gary Cotterell started again in fine form with a win. After a short delay while the breeze settled racing continued in similar breeze conditions to day 1

Gary put his stamp on the regatta winning all but four of 14 races completed on day 2 to skip well clear of Rob O’Brien with a neck and neck tussle for third between Gary Declauzel and Daniel Weizman with Gary getting third by 2.8 pts

Trophies were presented to:

1st Gary Cotterell (Sword) 38 pts

2nd Rob O’Brien (Sidewinder) 58.3 pts

3rd Gary Declauzel (Sidewinder) 107.2 pts

The Teams trophy was won by WA from NSW and QLD

Other awards presented were:

Bouy Hunter award – Allan Edward

Encouragement award – Ken Smith

The lucky draw of skippers out of the major placings was won by Greg Willis.
